Welcome to The Material Cafe.
This page showcases the collection of my work as a designer and also exhibits my journey as a design practitioner.
Each product has a story of its own!
The products are only made for display purpose and not for sale.

ABOUT ME
I am an alumnus of Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology. An Industrial Designer, I am primarily a Product & Furniture Designer.
I belong to a family of Furniture-Interior and Fashion Designers which made me love the idea of design and creation right from the beginning.
My favourite and most preferred material to work with is wood, however I enjoy working with fabric and metal as well.
I have keen eyes for traditional craft techniques: from all across India. I believe in design with cultural reflection; micro and macro and aim for that in my design process.
The Logo

Each and every thing around us is made of some kind of material. Each material has a structural composition in its biological and chemical terms. Thus, the logo is an abstract illustration of a bond; both chemical as well an emotional, encompassing our title.
Vision & Mission
At The Material Cafe, I, Shriya, envision to make all the viewers more aware of what all goes into the making of a product. The aim is to expand your knowledge and also stretch myself as a design practitioner.
We hope to make TMC an enjoyable yet highly experiential platform wherein you get to see what all goes behind the products that you see.

Methadology
From hands-on creative work to practical advice, I firmly believe in sustainable and functional design, along with providing insights to production processes which defines the kind of approach I have here at The Material Café.
My designs have a contemporary look with a sense of traditional touch wherever necessary.
Detailed Sketches and Renders
Design starts with a sketch, which formulates into a 3 dimensional render, followed by the actual construction process.
The end product that you see is after the completion of countless sketches during the ideation processes. The ideation prcess includes deciding the form, structure, aesthetic, finish, material as well as system mapping.

Machinery Usage
It takes a lot for a product to be made; what machines are required, what kind of technology is needed, what are some machine alternatives, how are they used, what are further possibilities, and much more.
In a world of mass production, I value the hand-technique and wish to keep it alive. So we aim to bridge the gap between something completely handcrafted and another one that is fully machine processed.
Tools, Techniques & Technicians
Not only machinery usage, but there are also various tools and techniques that require manpower, strength and skill, without which, any product cannot be made. These skills are labour intensive, highly necessary and inevitable in a design process. We are very fortunate to be living in a country wherein we have extremely skilled artisans and craft-persons who help us in the making and detailing process, each of them specializing in their own way. Their unmatched skills and efficient working is what brings the product to life.
